کارل مانرهایم از اشراف‌زاده‌های آلمانی-سوئدی-فنلاندی بود. وی در سال [[۱۹۱۷ (میلادی)|۱۹۱۷]] به فنلاند بازگشت. او از سال ۱۹۱۸ تا ۱۹۱۹ نایب‌السطنه فنلاند و از ۱۹۳۹ تا ۱۹۴۴ فرمانده کل [[نیروهای دفاعی فنلاند]] بود. وی در سال [[۱۹۴۴ (میلادی)|۱۹۴۴]] به عنوان ششمین [[فهرست رئیس‌جمهورهای فنلاند|رئیس‌جمهور فنلاند]] انتخاب شد.
