از دید [[جغرافیا]]یی شبه قاره بودن آن به‌خاطر این است که بر صفحه [[زمینساخت]]ی که در شکل قابل مشاهده است، جدا از قارهٔ آسیا قرار دارد.

بر اساس فرهنگ لغات انگلیسی آکسفورد، شبه‌قاره قسمی از یک قاره است که از نظر سیاسی، جغرافیایی و فرهنگی دارای تفاوت است. اصطلاح شبه‌قاره هند در امپراتوری بریتانیا به طور خاصی رایج بوده است.
