فلیکس-ژوزف باریا در ۱۳ سپتامبر ۱۸۲۲ در پاریس به دنیا آمد.{{sfn|Barrias, Félix Joseph: Legion of Honor}}
برادر او [[لوئی-ارنست باریا]] (۱۸۴۱–۱۹۰۵) بود که بعدها به یک مجسمه سازمجسمه‌ساز مشهور تبدیل شد.{{sfn|Soubies|1905}}
