هومی بابا خاطر به استفاده از زبان غیرقابل فهم و لفاظی‌های غامض مورد انتقاد است. در سال ۱۹۹۸، مجله فلسفه و ادبیات (Philosophy and Literature) جایزه دوم «بدنویسی» را به وی اهدا کرد<ref name="badwriting">The Bad Writing Contest, [http://denisdutton.com/bad_writing.htm Press Releases, 1996–1998] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304022732/http://denisdutton.com/bad_writing.htm |date=4 مارس 2016 }}, accessed 4 April 2010.</ref> این نشریه در توضیح این جایزه می‌نویسد به «بدترین ترکیب‌ها و عباراتی (از دیدگاه سبک) که در تمام کتاب‌های علمی و مقالات یافت می‌شود» اهدا می‌شود. بابا این جایزه را برای این جمله که در مکان فرهنگ (روتلج، ۱۹۹۴) آورده‌است دریافت کرد:
