Text Appearing Before Image:did not know at the time that the distant hills that I sawrising back of Kazvin were once the stronghold of the Sheikhal-Jahal, Old Man of the Mountains, the head of the AssassinBand in the twelfth century, for I am sure I should have notedthe outline of these hills more closely than I did and shouldhave sought for local legends regarding the picturesque thoughvillanous outlaws whose name, hashshdshln, hashish-eaters, cor-rupted by Europeans into assassin, has become synonymouswith murderer. The next stages of the journey were devoted to sleeping asbest I could in the uncomfortable conveyance, but I awoke intime to enjoy the grand mountain scenery of the Kharzan Pass.This lofty roadway crosses the Alborz range at a height ofseven thousand feet, or more, above the Caspian, and in winterit is one of the bleakest and most desolate places in all Persia, apathway of death where many a beast of burden falls by theway.
