البته به مروز زمان نام سرمت به مجموعه بزرگی از ایل‌های با تبارهای گوناگون اطلاق شد ولی قوم غالب در میان آنها به ویژه در منطقه جنوبی «سرمتستان» قوم ایرانی‌تبار بود. این قوم پس از قرن چهارم پیش از میلاد رفته رفته باآغاز [[دوره مهاجرت‌ها]]([[هون‌ها]]، [[گات‌ها]]) از جمعیتش کاسته شد، نوادگان این قوم در آغاز قرون پس از میلاد به [[الانان|آلان‌ها]] معروف شدند و در قرون جدید آنها را با نام [[آسی‌ها]] می‌شناسند که در منطقه [[اوستیا]] زندگی می‌کنند.<ref>James Minahan, "One Europe, Many Nations", Published by Greenwood Publishing Group, 2000. pg 518: "The Ossetians, calling themselves Iristi and their homeland Iryston are the most northerly Iranian people. ... گسترده‌ترین ناحیه‌ای که سرمتی‌ها در آن سکونت یافتند از یک سو سرزمین میان رودخانه [[ویستولا]] تا ریزشگاه رود [[دانوب]] و از سوی شرق تا [[ولگا]]، و از سوی دیگر از منطقه اسرارآمیز [[هیپربوری‌ها]] در شمال تا دریای سیاه و [[دریای خزر]] در جنوب بود. سرزمین‌های میان دریای سیاه و خزر تا کوه‌های [[قفقاز]] هم در محدوده آنها بشمار می‌آمد.
