== واژهشناسی ==
ریشه واژهشناختی واژه ''آتئیسم'' در [[زبان انگلیسی]]، پیش از قرن ۵ قبل از میلاد، از واژه یونانی atheos {{به یونانی|ἄθεος}}، سرچشمه گرفته است که به معنای "بیخدا(یان)" است. این واژه در [[تاریخ بیخدایی|گذشته]]، با دلالت ضمنی منفی، در اطلاق به کسانی به کار رفته که به [[الوهیت|خدایانی]] بیباور میشدند که در جامعه، در سطح گسترده، مورد پرستش قرار میگرفتهاند. با گسترش [[آزادی اندیشه]] و [[شکگرایی علمی|پرسشگری شکگرایانه]] و در پی آن، [[نقد دین|انتقادات]] روزافزون از دین، کاربرد این اصطلاح، محدودتر و هدفمند شد. نخستین افرادی که بهطور رسمی، خود را با واژه «بیخدا» تعریف میکردند، در قرن هجدهم بودند.
