هلند در سال ۱۹۲۹ در فورت واین در [[ایندیانا]] به دنیا آمد.کارشناسی [[فیزیک]] در موسسه تکنولوژی ماساچوست ([[MIT]]) سال ۱۹۵۰، کارشناسی ارشد ریاضیات در سال ۱۹۵۴ از [[دانشگاه میشیگان|دانشگاه میشیگانو]]و در سال ۱۹۵۹ دکترای [[علوم کامپیوتر]] را از دانشگاه میشیگان دریافت کرده‌است. <ref>http://krasnow.gmu.edu/images/DOM%20Photos/Vita%2007.doc</ref> او هم اکنون استاد روانشناسی و استاد مهندسی برق و علوم کامپیوتر در دانشگاه میشیگان است.او یکی از اعضای از مرکز مطالعات سیستم‌های پیچیده (CSCS) در [[دانشگاه میشیگان|دانشگاه میشیگانو]]و عضو هیئت امنا و هیأت علمی موسسه سانتا فه می‌باشد.
