The Minister of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran is responsible for directing and overseeing the activities of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development. This ministry is in charge of planning, implementing, and supervising the country's development projects in the areas of transportation, housing, and urban development.   • Supervision of development projects: Monitoring and evaluation of ongoing development projects to ensure quality and compliance with established plans and budgets.
  • Formulation and implementation of macro policies: Developing national policies in the areas of transportation and urban development, and collaborating with other ministries and government agencies to implement these policies.

History and Importance

The Ministry of Roads and Urban Development is one of the key ministries in the Islamic Republic of Iran, playing a vital role in the country's economic and social development. By implementing major development projects, improving transportation infrastructure, and providing adequate housing, this ministry aims to enhance people's quality of life and facilitate the movement of people and goods.

  • Establishment of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development

In July 2011, the Ministry of Road and Urban Development was established in Iran by merging the Ministry of Roads and Transportation and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. This consolidation aimed to streamline the government structure, foster better coordination, and enhance efficiency in the crucial sectors of transportation and urban planning.

  • Former Ministers

Since the establishment of this ministry, several ministers have served in this position:

  • Ali Nikzad: The first Minister of Roads and Urban Development who served in this position from July 2011 to August 2013. Before this, he was the Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
  • Abbas Akhoundi: He was the Minister of Roads and Urban Development from August 2013 to October 2018. He had previously held various responsibilities in former governments.
  • Mohammad Eslami: Initially appointed as the caretaker of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development in October 2018, and then started working as the Minister of Roads and Urban Development in November 2018, remaining in this position until September 2021.
  • Rostam Ghasemi: He was the Minister of Roads and Urban Development from September 2021 to November 2022. He had also previously been Iran's Oil Minister.
  • Shahriar Afandizadeh: After accepting Ghasemi's resignation from the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, the President appointed Mr. Shahriar Afandizadeh, who previously served as the Deputy Minister of Transportation in this ministry, as the caretaker of this ministry. He held this responsibility from November 22, 2022, to December 7, 2022.
  • Mehrdad Bazrpash: He has been serving as the Minister of Roads and Urban Development since December 2022.
