این فهرست جمهوری‌ها است. در دوران باستان (یا بعد از آن، در جوامعی که به اصطلاحات مدرن مراجعه نمی‌کردند تا شکل حکومت خود را مشخص کنند)، تعیین نوع حکومت و ارزیابی این که یک سازمان دولتی، «جمهوری» است یا خیر، بر اساس تحلیل گذشته‌نگر، توسط مورخان و نظریه‌پردازان سیاسی، صورت گرفته است.

Ancient Carthage ۴۸۰–۱۴۶ In 308 BC, an attempted coup to restore the monarch to full power failed, which led to Carthage retaining its republican government.[۱۳]

In modern usage, a republican system of government is loosely applied to any state which claims this designation.[۲۰] For example, the Dominican Republic under Rafael Trujillo is considered a republic, as is the Republic of Iraq under Saddam Hussein.
